Urgent Call to Prayer: Standing with Indonesia Amidst Unrest

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. – 1 Timothy 2:1-4

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. As intercessors for the nations, we are called to lift up regions in turmoil, seeking God’s mercy, justice, and peace. Today, I write to mobilize fervent prayer for Indonesia, where recent riots have erupted, threatening stability in this diverse archipelago nation. Let us unite in prayer, remembering that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16).

A Brief Overview of the Situation

The riots began on August 25, 2025, in Jakarta, the capital city, initially sparked by the tragic death of a food delivery driver who was killed by a police vehicle. This incident ignited widespread frustration over deeper issues, including economic inequality, corruption, and the government’s controversial decisions to enhance perks for lawmakers – such as increased pay and housing allowances – amidst rising living costs and unmet needs for ordinary citizens. What started as peaceful protests quickly escalated into violent clashes, with demonstrators throwing rocks and bottles, setting fires, and clashing with riot police. The unrest has since spread nationwide, affecting major cities including Bali and other urban centers across Indonesia’s islands. As of early September 2025, at least eight people have died, dozens have been injured, and significant property damage has occurred, including arson attacks on government buildings. Despite government concessions, such as rolling back some lawmaker benefits and tightening security, protests continue, drawing tens of thousands of students, workers, and activists fueled by long-building anger over economic hardships and perceived governmental priorities.
Indonesia, home to over 270 million people and a vibrant Christian community (about 10% of the population), has a history of such unrest turning volatile. While the current riots appear rooted in economic and anti-corruption demands under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration, we must pray proactively against any escalation.

Prayer Points

Let us approach the throne of grace with these specific requests, interceding for protection, wisdom, and reconciliation:

  1. For Peace and De-escalation: Heavenly Father, we pray for an immediate calming of the riots. Soften hearts on all sides—protesters, police, and authorities—that dialogue may replace violence. Bring swift resolution to the underlying issues of inequality and corruption, and protect innocent lives from further harm (Psalm 34:14).
  2. Against Exploitation by Provocateurs: Lord, we specifically ask that these riots not be exploited by provocateurs, agents, or opportunistic groups to incite violent ethnic divisions, as seen during the 1998 collapse of the Suharto regime, which led to horrific anti-Chinese pogroms and widespread chaos. Guard against any attempts to fuel religious tensions, particularly anti-Christian sentiments, reminiscent of the devastating Maluku Island riots from 1999-2002, where Christian-Muslim clashes claimed thousands of lives and displaced many. Thwart every scheme of division, and let Your peace prevail over hatred (Ephesians 6:12).
  3. For the Church and Christian Communities: Strengthen the Indonesian Church during this time. Protect believers from any backlash, empower them to be peacemakers, and use this moment for the Gospel to shine brightly. Provide for those affected by the unrest, including families who have lost loved ones or livelihoods.
  4. For Government and Leaders: Grant wisdom to President Prabowo and officials to address grievances justly and transparently. Soften their hearts to prioritize the needs of the poor and marginalized, and guide them toward policies that promote unity and fairness (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
  5. For Healing and Unity: Father, heal the wounds of this nation—economic, social, and spiritual. Bind Indonesia together in diversity, fostering reconciliation across ethnic, religious, and economic lines. Let this crisis become a turning point for revival and justice.

Please share this letter with your prayer groups, churches, and networks. If the Lord lays additional burdens on your heart, please reply so we can intercede together.
